Hurling

St John's is the parish school team and represents St. John's Senior School, Ballybough Street, Kilkenny and Johnswell National School. St. John's has a rich history of success when it comes to participating in all Cumann na mBunscoil competitions including hurling. gaelic football, camogie and handball.

St John's won the county final in football in 2002 and the hurling final in 2008. The school has also had great successes in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class inter- class hurling leagues. We have a proud record of past pupils captaining Kilkenny senior hurling teams in All Ireland Finals.
Andy Comerford was captain when Kilkenny defeated Clare in 2002. His brother Martin Comerford was captain in 2004 when Cork defeated Kilkenny and Brian Hogan was captain in 2011 when Kilkenny defeated Tipperary. Kilkenny player Paddy Deegan is also a past pupil of our school.

GAA continues to thrive in our school, as the children train before school, at break times and after school in preparation for inter school games. We have recently acquired a new sand based pitch beside our school which is a great asset in the development of our school teams.
